Homecoming 2021

Just another typical Delta Pi event

After a nearly 2-year long covid induced hiatus the brothers of Delta Pi gathered in Bloomsburg to rekindle long held friendships and remind folks at BU what “Greek” looks like.  In typical Delta Pi fashion Joe Zac meticulously planned for our arrival months in advance.  Tailgate slots were reserved, mountains of food were ordered, GFY tailgate cups were delivered, and the upcoming hijinks were publicized.  Everything was perfect until, in typical Delta Pi fashion, the guano hit the rotary air circulation device!  Midweek Joe received a call from Lucy Hergan (long suffering wife of Brother Andy Hergan) that the weather forecast for Saturday was somewhere between stage 5 typhoon and biblical Armageddon.  In typical Delta Pi fashion, a contingency was quickly fashioned, and the Caldwell Consistory was designated as our wet weather fallback.   On Friday night it was obvious that only idiots and GDI’s would be standing in the rain at tailgate, so Plan B was implemented.

Saturday’s monsoon arrived on schedule but the legions of Delta Pi Brothers yearning for good times and a beer or two would not be deterred. By noon approximately 85 active and alumni brothers of Delta Pi filled the room at the Caldwell Consistory.  We took a brief respite from the revelry to celebrate the awarding of the DPSPAA Scholarships.  When we launched our scholarship 15 years ago our inaugural award was $500.  This years presentation was MC’ed by President Jeff Reitterman and Scholarship Chair Tony Vannicola and they handed out multiple scholarship totaling over $9000!  As is typically the case, Delta Pi set the standard for Greek scholarships and much bigger things are in the works for future years.  After a couple of quick group pictures to document our dominance, the boys returned to swilling beer, scarfing ridiculous amounts of food, and telling lies about their experiences “in the day”.

Just a few of the many scholarships awarded on this fine day.

Our “dry tailgate” ended at 2 p.m. and the plundering hoard of Delta Pi was unleashed on the general population.  The “old guys” tended to gravitate to the “All Greek” site established by Dave and Morgan Decoteau (Care to guess their Greek affiliation?!) at Brewski’s on Main St.  Instantly Delta Pi letters dominated the room and we heard the typical refrain. “Delta Pi letters are everywhere!”  The youngsters issued an open invitation to any Alumni who could hang and then retired to their house to pregame for the 1030 PM!!!  mixer they had planned.  (Cruel, half of us were on their second prostate servicing by that hour!)

The boys.

In summary the actives showed up with 25-30 guys and left 60 or so alumni feeling very good about the future of Delta Pi on the BU campus.  We have a long history of thumbing our nose at adversity and the young guys are well prepared to carry on that tradition.  We were BY FAR the biggest group at Homecoming and the strength and unity of our Alumni organization was not lost on our actives.   Add 55 years of history to current vitality, mix in a growing scholarship commitment, and you have a fraternity poised to lead the new “Greek Life” at BU.  Some would call Delta Pi’s showing at Homecoming extraordinary.  I call it typical.
